Getting to KOWI SEI along the Vía al Mar

A woman and a girl walk down a stone path through the greenery toward the beach.

KOWI SEI sits at Km 35 of the Vía al Mar, in Arroyo Grande, a district in the north of Cartagena de Indias. From the city it is half an hour by road.

From Cartagena

Head north through the Crespo tunnel, which joins the Vía al Mar and leads straight onto the El Gran Manglar viaduct. The viaduct crosses the Ciénaga de la Virgen for 5.4 kilometers, 4.73 of them over the water at a height of about seven meters. Its asphalt contains recycled rubber to soften the noise over the areas where birds nest. According to Colombia's infrastructure agency (ANI), it cuts the time in and out of Cartagena on this road by up to 50 percent.

After the viaduct the road continues north through the districts of the northern zone to Arroyo Grande. For your map, the address is Km 35, Vía al Mar, Arroyo Grande, Cartagena de Indias. When you book a visit, we arrange your arrival at the land with you.

From Barranquilla

From Barranquilla the route runs the other way. It crosses the Atlántico department through Puerto Colombia, Tubará, Juan de Acosta and Piojó, and enters Bolívar at Santa Catalina. The two cities are 109.9 kilometers apart on this road, the figure given for the 4G highway project that opened in December 2021.

Tolls in 2026

The Cartagena to Barranquilla Vía al Mar has three tolls. Marahuaco is in Bolívar, within Arroyo Grande, and since January 16, 2026 it charges COP 22,200 in category 1, for cars, and COP 33,300 in category 2, for buses. Puerto Colombia and Papiros are in the Atlántico. Puerto Colombia charges COP 20,700 for category 1.

Road conditions

The road is run by the Ruta Costera concession. It is worth checking its condition on the day you travel, especially in the rainy season. During the heavy rains of November 2022, earth and fallen trees covered the road, with traffic down to a single lane on one stretch.

What to bring to the visit

The visit is on foot. You walk the land among the trees and down to the beach, first on earth and then on sand.

  • Closed shoes for the land and sandals for the sand.
  • Light, pale clothing.
  • A hat or cap and sunglasses.
  • Sunscreen and insect repellent.
  • Water in a reusable bottle.
